Yes, I think the original 48 min film was the best film ever made at Gobabeb. I was not particularly thrilled by the National Geographic adaptation which responded to ‘the American public is not interested in only natural history films without people’. (E-mail, 13 June 2020)

One thing that was gained was that the film showed Hughes himself in action and managed to extract a comment from him on why he filmed. Though he did not speak, his comment was recorded as: ‘For this man, night is a favourite time in the desert. He speaks of incalculable horizons, the quiet, the experience of communing with wild things. Of the joyous feeling of being close to wildlife and observing its natural behaviour’. That lyrical romantic strain links Hughes with the English Romantic tradition in poetry with Wordsworth’s ‘philosophy of joy’ at oneness with nature and suggests links with later figures like Craig Foster with his interest in ‘primal joy’ in nature.
